15.
My mother bends over me. Her face appears fuzzy, but I recognize the smell of her perfume. In spite of my predicament, it kindles a cozy feeling of comfort.
âMarco! Oh, my poor boy!â she whispers. A tear drops onto my cheek. My skin twitches slightly.
Her eyes widen. âMarco? Marco, can you hear me?â
I want to reply, but my throat is still paralyzed. I try to create any kind of reaction, moving my head or at least a finger. But the connection between my brain and my muscles seems to be severed. Iâm trapped in a body that doesnât obey me anymore.
Gathering all my willpower, I manage to blink.
âMarco!â My motherâs voice sounds startled. âMarco, if you can hear me, please blink twice!â
I close my eyes briefly once, then again.
She sobs. She kisses me and hugs me. âDoctor!â she shouts. âDoctor Berkholm! Come quickly!â She runs out of the room.
Iâm not sure whether I should be happy about this. What if I stay like this forever, only being able to communicate by blinking? What a horrendous thought! Iâd rather stay in that strange world where Iâm wandering around in my dream state.
The Cubeworld. Now I remember being in it often, long before I got into this mess. I have explored caves, beat monsters, built castles. I survived adventures and solved riddles and quests. I stood in a room full of levers and found the combination that opened the metal door at the other end. Endermen and creepers didnât frighten me. It was just a game, after all.
Itâs called Minecraft.
I remember watching tons of letâs-play videos on YouTube. In some of them, a guy named Simon played the game. He was kind of funny, always doing the wrong thing, creating hilarious situations. One day, my mother looked over my shoulder, shaking her head in disbelief. She didnât get why I preferred these clips over the TV cartoon shows. âWhatâs so interesting about watching someone else playing a computer game?â she asked. I didnât even try to explain. She wouldnât have understood anyway.
The Cubeworld became kind of a second home to me. Countless hours were spent there. I met new friends on various Minecraft servers. I began creating my own adventure maps as a challenge for other players. Even though the cube graphics seemed a bit outdated compared to the sleek games on my Xbox, I loved this game more than any other. Instead of just walking around, solving the quests others had put there, I could change the environment and even create my own world. This endless creative freedom was what totally grabbed me.
No wonder my dream world was created after this model.
Was it some kind of self-protection of my brain that led to me being trapped in this dream? Or has the stuff Amelyâs stepfather injected into me destroyed parts of my brain? It appears like the damage is not permanent, for piece by piece, I have gotten my memory back.
I now remember being in a small hut with three signs. One read: âThe exit lies in the Nether.
